Vehicle Description This USA-spec 1968 base Porsche 911 was delivered to the current owner at the Zuffenhausen factory in West Germany on February 26, 1968.
It was mostly driven in Europe the first two years and was stored in the U.
S.
for about 15 years.
It was restored in 2004-05 and has since been driven less than 500 miles.
Most of the maintenance and all restoration was performed by the owner.
It was professionally painted, with all 13 parts painted separately.
This sale includes the original match-numbered 1990cc engine and the original Weber carburetors, the final year before fuel injection.
The car is equipped with the original 5-speed transmission.
The car comes with five original steel wheels (four without tires, one with serviceable tire as spare) and additionally the four original mounted Fuchs wheels - factory purchased one year later in 1969 - with serviceable late-period tires.
According to the owner, it needs new torsion bars all around, though the rear torsion tunnels were cleaned, inspected and treated for minor rust.
The front torsion has not been serviced.
Also included with the sale are the Official Porsche Production Specifications for car #11835161, pertaining to the completion date of February 21, 1968.
Optional equipment includes leatherette headrest, bumper horns, all-tint glass, Becker Europa AM/FM radio and speaker, antenna and Pirelli tires (165/15).
The car has never been raced.
This Porsche also comes with a unique story:
The owner built and donated a large-scale model of the nuclear aircraft carrier Enterprise (CVAN/CVN-65) to the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum in Washington, D.
C.
It has been exhibited there since 1982 and seen by millions, with an HO-scale model of this very Porsche hidden in different places on the aircraft carrier model over the decades for children and adults to find.
While currently closed, the exhibit will resume display after the museum building renovation is complete in two to three years.
The model of this very Porsche is currently stored with the model ship as a registered official Smithsonian artifact.
